Oliver Lee OBE

Professional passions and goals

Oliver has a lifelong interest in leadership, public service, and organisational culture; he has written and spoken regularly on these subjects.

Skill set and experience

Oliver is a highly experienced strategic leader and chief executive. He commanded 45 Commando in Helmand, Afghanistan, leading unprecedented success in reducing violence and delivering community engagement and regeneration.

He has led front-line operations all over the world and served in key roles in Whitehall on the personal staff of Defence Ministers and the Chief of the Defence Staff.

Professional qualifications or memberships

After graduating from Cambridge University, Oliver joined the Royal Marines, serving for 18 years and becoming the youngest full colonel since the Second World War. He was decorated three times for service, receiving the MBE and later the OBE.

Interests and hobbies

He is married with two teenage children, and in his spare time enjoys following sports (rugby in particular) and hill walking.

Work history

Oliver became Chief Executive Officer of West Midlands Fire Service in March 2024.

He left the Royal Marines on a point of personal principle in 2014 and has since built a successful second career as a Chief Executive, beginning with six years at The Challenge, a large social enterprise delivering government and other contracts, dedicated to developing young people through social inclusion and integration.

Prior to joining WMFS, he served as Chief Executive of Places Leisure, leading 6,500 employees at 100 sites across the UK.
