Westbury Road, Birmingham, UK

A severe fire at a house in Edgbaston is believed to be linked to the growing of cannabis.

We were alerted at 8.10pm on Wednesday 17 August after smoke was seen coming from the roof of a property in Westbury Road.

Three fire engines, a 4×4 Brigade Response Vehicle and an aerial platform attended, crewed by 20 firefighters from Ladywood, Woodgate Valley, Handsworth and Highgate fire stations.

Our first crewed was at the scene four minutes after being mobilised.

The roof space and first floor of the two-storey, mid-terraced house were affected by the fire, which also spread to the roof space of a neighbouring property.

It was extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reel jets.

We revisited the scene at 7am to confirm that that there were no remaining hotspots.

West Midlands Police are investigating.
