At 10.40pm on Sunday 17 July the emergency services responded to a serious road traffic incident on Belgrave Middleway, Balsall Heath heading into Birmingham.

A car carrying five people had been in collision with the central reservation barriers.

Four fire engines responded, crewed by 20 firefighters from Highgate, Bournbrook and Ladywood fire stations. The first arrived two minutes after being mobilised.

Four of the people in the vehicle had managed to get themselves out before we arrived. A plan was put in place to rapidly free the fifth, on whom our crews and paramedics performed CPR.

All of our crews had left the scene by 12.50am. The road was expected to stay closed for several hours for police investigations.
