We were called at 1:49pm to reports of a fire in a shredder of a scrap facility on Rabone Lane, Smethwick.
Currently, a total of 8 fire crews are in attendance dealing with the blaze, with two further crews en route. There is a significant smoke plume in the area so residents, businesses and those travelling in and near Rabone Lane are asked to avoid the area and close all doors and windows where possible.
Crews are making good progress at the incident, where main jets and plant machinery are in use to gain access to and deal with the fire. Crews are working hard to ensure the incident doesn’t spread to nearby factories.
Road closures on Rabone Lane are in place, so please avoid the area due to traffic build-up.
A multi-agency briefing has taken place and we remain at the scene tackling the fire, where crews have been supported by drone operations.
Rabone Lane remains closed. If you live or work in the local area and are affected by the smoke plume, keep your windows and doors closed.

While the fire is out, reduced numbers of crew will remain at the scene for a few hours, after which re-visits will be in place throughout the coming days.
Rabone Lane will stay closed until tomorrow because of the volume of surface water and the freezing temperatures.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are now underway.
