Crews extinguish flat/house fire in Handsworth Wood

Shortly after 2.55am on Thursday (29 August), we responded to Handsworth Wood Road, Birmingham. Six fire engines, a 4×4 brigade response vehicle and a hydraulic aerial platform initially responded, crewed by around 35 firefighters. This was a fire in a three-storey semi-detached property, comprising flats and a house. The fire affected the first and second floors and the roof space. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire. Drone operations supported them. Seven adults from five flats were led to safety by firefighters. Three residents from another property self-evacuated before our arrival. There were no injuries or casualties. Police colleagues remain in attendance to assist with traffic management. We have scaled down our resources at this incident as firefighters work to extinguish any remaining hotspots. A hydraulic aerial platform and a fire engine remain at the scene. Handsworth Wood Road remains closed as this work continues.

A thorough check with thermal imaging cameras has been carried out and no further hotspots remain. We have left the scene. Handsworth Wood Road has re-opened.
