Our fire investigators are working to establish the cause of a severe fire in a two-storey building in Timberley Lane, Shard End, Birmingham.

We were alerted to the incident at 4.53pm on Sunday (6 November).

Four fire engines, two 4×4 Brigade Response Vehicles and an aerial platform responded, with the first crew arriving five minutes after being mobilised.

The building was well alight and a nearby road had to be closed for safety because of drifting smoke.

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used main jets and hose reel jets to tackle the fire. By 6.50pm they had made good progress in bringing it under control and, by 8.30pm, we had started to scale down the resources at the scene.

At one stage during the firefighting operation we withdrew firefighters from inside the building because some of the roof had collapsed.
