Bissell Street, Birmingham, UK

At 11.03pm on Saturday (8 July) we responded to a severe fire involving a two-storey food warehouse in Bissell Street, Highgate, Birmingham.

Our first crew arrived within three minutes of being mobilised. Initially, six fire crews responded, but they were joined throughout the incident by multiple other resources including a hydraulic aerial platform.

Several firefighters wore breathing apparatus to tackle the fire, and two main water jets were brought into use.

As a precaution, two adults and a child were temporarily relocated from their nearby flat but later told they could return.

Bissell Street was closed for safety during our firefighting operations. We would like to thank anyone affected by the closure for their patience and understanding.

We worked closely with several agencies to bring the incident to a safe conclusion, including our police and ambulance colleagues, Cadent and National Grid.

We revisited the scene several times throughout Sunday and into early Monday morning, to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.

Our fire investigators say that the fire started accidentally, as a result of an electrical issue.
