Fire in a void school, Balsall Heath

Clifton Road and Hertford Road are closed while we work at the scene. Brunswick Road, between White Road and Hertford Road, is also closed.

Police colleagues are assisting with traffic management.

Firefighters remain at the scene; gas and electric have been isolated.

Four fire engines and two hydraulic platforms remain in operation at this incident as we continue to make progress in extinguishing the fire.

We are working to reduce our resources, and a plan is being formulated to reopen local roads.

Crews have made excellent progress in extinguishing the fire at the former school premises. During the night and early hours, crews used thermal image cameras to identify and damp down hot spots.

In the early hours of Tuesday (23 April) morning, our resources at the scene were reduced to one fire engine and one hydraulic aerial platform.

As of 0700 this morning, crews continue to monitor the scene, damping down hot spots as necessary.

Due to potential structural issues, a full inspection of the premises has not been possible. As a result, the cause of this incident is not yet known.

A multi-agency meeting, between fire crews, local management and Birmingham City Council is expected to take place shortly.

A further update, including information about road closures, will be issued shortly.

Crews remain at the scene, with fire investigations currently in progress. Searches and assessments of the premises are underway using our hydraulic aerial platform and a drone team.

Birmingham City Council and school representatives have attended the scene and are being kept informed.

Road closures, except Clifton Road itself, have all been lifted. The closure on Clifton Road is expected to be in place for the remainder of the day.

We have now left this incident. Crews will return throughout the day and night to check for hotspots.
