We received a call to reports of a fire at 21:06 on Sunday 22 May at a derelict factory unit on Marriot Road, Dudley.

The incident involved a severe fire in the factory unit, which measured around 100m x 50m.

A total of 16 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, using hose reel jets and a main jet.

A partial roof collapse occurred, and part of the roof contained asbestos sheeting – this was confirmed by our on-site hazardous materials officer. The asbestos was not significantly impacted by the fire, but full safety precautions were taken to protect our crews, including the use of an aerial drone to monitor the roof temperature from the air.

After initially extinguishing the fire around 23:00, crews revisited the premises twice during the night to inspect it for any hot spots. A further revisit is expected to take place later on the morning of 23 May.

No casualties were involved in this incident and the cause is still under investigation.
