Around 40 firefighters have been tackling an overnight fire involving two houses in Perry Barr.

We responded at 3.52am on Thursday (15 June) to Cliveden Avenue.

The first of seven fire crews arrived within two minutes of being mobilised. An aerial platform was also sent to the scene.

This was a severe fire in a semi-detached house, which spread to the roof space/loft conversion of the adjoining property on Walsall Road.

Eleven people, including three children, managed to get themselves to safety.

One woman was checked over at the scene by paramedics.

The fire was extinguished using hose reels and two main jets, and the operation involved around a dozen firefighters in breathing apparatus entering the properties.

Our investigators are working to establish how it started.

Updates for this incident

Our investigators believe this fire spread from a garden brazier, to a fence and then to the house.

The owners had been safely using the brazier a few days before the fire. It’s likely that the fire had continued to smoulder and the wind caused it to flare back up.
