WMFS OFFICIAL – NEW – FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST – FOI23106
RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 REQUEST
I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested further to your freedom of information request.
Please find below a summary of our findings.
Please supply me with data relating to fires on balconies on residential buildings in your area, as follows;
How many fires involving balconies occurred in total between 1st August 2022 and 31st July 2023?
There were 14 fires involving balconies between 01/08/2022 and 01/08/2023.
In the same period, how many fires occurred where balconies where found to have contributed to the spread of the fire across the external walls?
This information is exempt under Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 as we do not hold information regarding fires spreading on external walls.
Please provide data on the causes of any fires that started on balconies in the period (ie; barbecue, discarded cigarette, electrical appliance fault, etc) and please provide the number of occurrences for each cause.
Of the 14 fires involving balconies, 4 started on a balcony. Each of these 4 had a source of ‘Smoking materials (cigarettes, cigars etc.)’.
It is important to note that the relevant data was collected using a key word search of both incident logs and workbook free text entries, and therefore there is the potential for errors. To reduce this risk of error I manually read the entries referencing balconies to reduce any irrelevant incidents.
