I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested further to your freedom of information request. 

Please find below a summary of our findings. 


I would like to request the roles of  

a) all the firefighters in the 5 different roles in a PRL 
b) The firefighter roles on the HP/ALP 


The rider positions are as follows: 

  1. OIC (Officer In Charge)- responsible for guiding the appliance route to incident or activity, and then developing safe systems of work using NOG (National Operational Guidance) to deal with incidents effectively. 
  1. DRIVER – EFAD (Emergency Fire Appliance Driver) trained and responsible for driving the appliance to incident, under MORR (Management of Road Risk). On arrival, acts as pump operator, securing water supplies and directing to fire-ground jets. 
  1. BA (Breathing Apparatus) WEARER No.1 – Responsible for assertive firefighting and effecting any rescues within the risk area using BA equipment and NOG procedures, as BA team leader. 
  1. ECO (Entry Control Operator) – Responsible for monitoring BA wearer movements, utilising BA Entry Control equipment and NOG procedures. 
  1. BA WEARER No.2 – Responsible for assertive firefighting and effecting any rescues within the risk area using BA equipment and NOG procedures, as BA team member. 

HP (Hydraulic Platform) crew – 2 Firefighters, HP trained. Responsible for directing and driving HP appliance to incident. Supporting OIC in positioning the HP safely on the incident ground, in most effective position to impact on firefighting activity, and specific roles (i) On ground – ensuring lock systems and vehicle safety are in place, and communications systems are established (ii) Cradle Operator, responsible for vertical ascension in cradle and directing to effective position for firefighting actions.
