RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 REQUEST

I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested further to your freedom of information request.

Please find below a summary of our findings.

Request

The number of incidents of suspected suicide or attempted suicides attended by your crews/staff between March 16th 2020 and 17th December 2020.

Please see attached

Please note the following:

In order to classify each incident as either a threat or an attempt, I have examined the log for each one and have applied the following criteria:

  1. ‘Threats’ include where a person has either threatened suicide or mentioned feeling suicidal, as well as those incidents where a person has put themselves at risk of harm by their actions but have not actually resulted in any harm coming to them (e.g. a person has climbed a bridge and threatened to jump but has not done so).
  2. ‘Attempts’ are those incidents where a person has tried to end their life by whatever means but has survived, including parasuicide (e.g. the person jumped from the bridge but survived).
  3. Incidents where it is believed the person died as a result of their actions have been categorised as a ‘fatality’, as a verdict of suicide can only be recorded by a Coroner.
