Professional passions and goals

Wayne is driven to ensure a people first approach, both staff and the communities we serve are at the heart of everything we do. This ensures we provide an excellent service, delivered with the utmost professionalism, and ensures staff are proud to work for our service.

Wayne is an experienced Multi Agency and CBRN Gold Commander who has attended some of the UK’s most significant operational incidents, including London terrorist attacks and the devastating Grenfell Tower fire.

Wayne is the West Midlands Conurbation Local Resilience Forum Chair and led the region’s response to Covid 19.

Wayne has extensive experience of leading on Organisational Cultural change, Blue Light Collaboration, Incident Command, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Health and Safety and Operational Assurance.

Professional qualifications or memberships

Wayne has attained an MBA in Business Administration, and Level 7 diplomas in Leadership & Management and Digital Leadership, plus qualifications in Project, Programme and Portfolio Management, Coaching & Mentoring and has completed the Executive Leadership Programme. He is the NFCC Health & Safety Committee Chair and sits on the NFCC EDI Project Board.

Wayne was awarded the Most Influential BAME Individual in Fire at the Excellence in Fire & Emergency Awards in December 2021 and the Senior Leaders award at the Inaugural Black Talent Awards held in Birmingham in September 2022.

Interests and hobbies

An ex-professional footballer, with UEFA coaching qualifications, Wayne enjoys watching/coaching football, boxing and playing golf. Wayne is Director for Fire and a Trustee for 999 Cenotaph and Director for 999 Day.

Work history

Wayne started his career as a firefighter in East London and spent 27 years in London Fire Brigade rising to the role of Assistant Commissioner. He has led various functions including Protection, Operation’s (South East Area), Incident Management and Operational Policy and Assurance.

Wayne joined West Midlands Fire Service, as Deputy Chief Fire Officer, from London Fire Brigade in November 2019 and was Programme Executive with responsibility for Community Risk Reduction before taking up the role of Chief Fire Officer in January 2023.
