Skill set and experience

Karen’s career has spanned both the public and private sector. She has extensive leadership experience in strategic planning and organisational development, performance and project management, as well as corporate risk, audit and inspection.

Work history

Karen joined West Midlands Fire Service in 2005 and has worked across a variety of roles within our Strategy, Operations and People functions.

Her strategy role saw her lead the development and assurance of our Service Strategy, as well as the provision of support services through a Service Level Agreement to the National Fire Chiefs Council.

Karen is also Clerk to West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority, and is Senior Information Responsible Officer for WMFS.

She currently leads our Enabling Services programme to ensure that Digital and Data, Communications and Finance and Procurement services are inclusive and enable consistent delivery of our services to our communities.

Karen was appointed temporarily to the role of Assistant Chief Fire Officer in January 2023 and then subsequently was appointed Head of Development and Inclusion in September 2023.
