The Future Melting Pot

The Future Melting Pot (TFMP) is a local community interest company, based at West Midlands Fire Service HQ. It brings together the public and private sectors and young people to tackle youth unemployment in Birmingham.

TFMP’s mission, working in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service, is to build brighter futures for young people through education, training and employment to reduce the public spend and create economic growth. Its services are delivered in local communities and the team is currently providing access to training and work to 16 to 24-year-olds from the Eastside area of Birmingham.

The 12-week intensive EmployAbility programme focuses on engaging vulnerable young people who aren’t in education, employment or training to offer them the skills and assistance they need to be ‘work-ready’.

The core themes include self-discovery, working with others, looking to the future and commitment and attitude to work. The programme gives individuals access to employment taster days, work experience and apprenticeships.

Group training sessions and one-to-one sessions are complemented by working with experienced operational fire officers. Participants are assigned a personal mentor throughout.

Employers benefit from having direct access to skilled young people from hard-to-reach groups. This improves their community links and evidences their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through the positive social impact of the opportunities they provide.

TFMP’s work also enables West Midlands Fire Service to engage with vulnerable young people and families from diverse communities, and to offer a variety of free training in subjects like first aid and fire safety – helping to ‘improve lives to save lives’ in low socio-economic areas.
