We’re very sad to confirm that a pensioner has died in a fire at his home in Birmingham.
Some 30 firefighters attended the incident on City Road, Soho. Unfortunately, in spite of our crews arriving on scene within 5 minutes, the occupier was found dead inside the property. His family have been informed and our thoughts and sympathies are with them.
A 999 caller alerted us to the fire at 4.32am this morning (Friday 10 February). Five fire engines and one of our aerial hydraulic platforms were deployed, as well as our Technical Rescue Unit.
Station Commander Simon Woodward gave this update at the scene:

City Road is likely to remain closed near the scene for most of today, while our operations and investigations continue.
