At 2.56am today (Thurs 28 Feb) we were alerted to a large fire at premises in Wharfdale Road, Tyseley.

Around 100 firefighters and 20 fire engines have been at the scene, although by 6am resources were due to be scaled down to six fire engines and two hydraulic platforms.

The first crews arrived within two and three minutes.

Our fire control’s use of 999eye imagery meant they were able to assess the fire as significant in its early stages, and increase the number of resources initially deployed.  As a result, we were able to protect and save a number of neighbouring businesses.

Remaining crews are expected to be at the scene for several hours, along with our fire investigators.

The building was a single-storey factory unit which housed a car/tyre workshop, part of which collapsed because of the fire.

Several of the fire engines were deployed to relay water from a nearby canal, as well as our high volume pumping unit.

We would ask people to avoid the area for the time being, and urge drivers to find alternative routes while some local roads remain closed. People who live nearby should keep doors and windows closed while smoke remains in the area.
