West Midlands Fire Service thanks community for support following water mains burst West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) has thanked people affected by a burst water main in Birmingham for their support, as work to protect properties and safely bring the incident to a close continues. As of 3.30pm Friday, no evacuations have been carried out and no rescues have been necessary. Shortly after 6.30am on Friday (6 September), three fire engines responded to Knowle Road in the Springfield area of the city after a water main burst, affecting several nearby roads. Local premises including houses and businesses have been affected, but damage has been limited. Fire crews continue to pump water from affected premises at street level into the nearby River Cole as water engineers work to repair the main. Severn Trent Water are working towards isolating the supply. They will also be distributing bottled water to affected houses in due course. Group Commander Andrew Shakespeare said: “Fire and rescue crews have been at the scene for several hours and continue to work hard to limit any impact of the leak on the public. “We’d like to thank the local community for their ongoing support. A restaurant and banqueting suite has provided firefighters and other agency staff with food and drinks throughout the day, and let us use their facilities, which has helped enormously. “Work at the scene is expected to go on for some time, as we and partner agencies work to bring this incident to a safe conclusion”. The Stratford Road between Knowle Road and Bromyard Road remains closed. Please continue to avoid the area.
Three fire engines remain at the scene and firefighters will continue to support Severn Trent Water engineers at this incident. Road closures remain in place. Severn Trent Water will be issuing updates on their website: https://www.stwater.co.uk/in-my-area/incidents/water-supply-interruptions-in-yardley-/
There has been a significant reduction in water flow from the main. Levels of standing water on the road have also decreased. Low-level pumps have been in operation to remove standing water from the road. Two fire engines remain at the scene.
One fire engine remains at the scene. A significant reduction in standing water means once the road has been cleared, it will be re-opened with one-lane traffic, controlled with portable traffic lights.
Firefighters left the scene at approximately 11.45pm last night, after Severn Trent Water engineers significantly reduced water flow from the burst main. Crews removed a significant amount of standing water from the road, allowing Severn Trent to sweep and re-open one side of Stratford Road.
