5 minute attendance time:

We carried out a number of house fire tests. They showed that, in a lounge fire, if the door is closed and a smoke alarm is fitted, our response times increase your chances of survival. That’s why we aim for 5 minutes in ‘life or death’ incidents like house fire and car crashes.

Leading doctors and medical experts agree that a five-minute response to serious road traffic collisions is key to your chances of surviving. Half of the people who die after being trapped in vehicles do so within minutes of the collision, which is why even a small delay could heighten the chances of death or more serious injury.

The same rules apply if someone is drowning – call 999 and ask for ‘Fire.’ Never jump into the water to try and save someone yourself. We’ve got more advice on this on our Water Safety page.
