Please find below a summary of our findings.

Request

I would like to request some information under the freedom of information act with regards to your fire safety / protection department.
In terms of your organisational structure with the Fire Safety department, how many ‘grey’ book staff do you employ and what ranks are they? And how many ‘green book’ (non operational) fire safety inspectors do you employ?

Reply

This information is exempt under section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 as this information is reasonably accessible to the requestor. Information concerning how many ‘grey’ book staff do you employ and what ranks are they? And how many ‘green book’ (non-operational) fire safety inspectors do you employ can be found on West Midlands Fire Service website at the following link:

Request

Also where do your trainee ‘green book’ fire safety inspectors and fully qualified fire safety inspectors sit and what career progression is available to them?

Reply

All of our Fire Safety Staff work from either West Midlands Fire Service HQ in Birmingham or from one of our operational fire stations.

With regards to career progression, all vacancies are advertised internally and any member of staff can apply provided that they meet the criteria detailed on the individual job specification.

£36379 (scp 41) Top of scale

Request

If applicable what is the annual salary for those roles that a competent green book fire safety inspector can progress into?

Request

Technical 1A £36379 (scp 41)

Request

And what qualifications and experience does a fire safety inspector require in order to be deemed fully competent in role and how long does this take to achieve?
Reply

This information is freely available on the internet.  CFOA Publications include a “Competency Framework for Business Fire Safety Regulators” which we follow.

http://www.cfoa.org.uk/

Please note: The role is no different as they are both Fire Safety Inspecting Officers. However the grey book staff also work in line with the Watch Commander role map as they still have to be operationally ready and competent.

If you have any queries about this email, please contact me.  Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
