RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 REQUEST
I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested on 19th July 2017.
Please find below a summary of our findings.
- a) Number of appointed fire safety inspectors (FTE) at 31 March of each year

The number of staff within the WMFS is based on a number of factors and this is decided by the fire authority based on evidence and financial resources available. The West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority has a rolling plan based on community needs, risk profiles, resources available, incorporating requirements of investment into equipment and buildings etc. Included into this is the allocation and distribution of employees following strategic reviews into operational requirements. The operating model within the protection department (fire safety) is continually reviewed as a result of the rolling plan and subsequently the number of full time fire safety officers fluctuates. It is also worth mentioning that currently all fire fighters have completed or are undergoing training in basic fire safety allowing them to deal with simple issues leaving more capacity for dedicated fire safety officers to carry out more complex issues and help support the businesses within the West Midlands.
Please note we have not included the figures for Brigade Manager and Area Managers on the attached document because their roles are more strategic and managerial in Fire Safety and do not necessarily be involved in inspections and enforcement. For your information there has been 1 Area Manager and 1 Brigade Manager for all the consecutive years.
