RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 REQUEST

I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested on 7th July.

Please find below a summary of our findings.

For each of the following questions information is provided for each year: 2015 and 2016 to date

The number of 999 incidents each year?

There were 24,453 incidents in 2015 and 11,635 incidents from January – June 2016. The latter figure is subject to change as data from April 2016 has not yet been finalised. These figures include all emergency incidents, including calls received from the police, ambulance etc rather than just calls from members of the public. They ignore incidents attended outside the West Midlands Metropolitan Borough area

How many people employed (full time) in the Fire and Rescue Control Room- as at benchmark point of your choosing each year

As of 1.4.15: 61 people were employed in Fire Control, some were job share or part time so these 61 people covered a total of 56.5 full time equivalent posts.

As of 1.7.16: 57 people are employed in Fire Control, some are job share or part time so these 57 people cover a total of 51 full time equivalent posts.

These figures do not include agency staff.

Average time to confirm a location and dispatch a fire engine (in minutes and seconds, each year)

2015: 1 min, 27 secs

2016 Jan – Jun: 1 min 23 secs

This is the time taken in Fire Control from receiving the call to assigning an appliance

2016 Jan – Jun: 5 min 16 secs

This includes the time it takes a crew at a station to mobilise (get into the appliance and start moving) as well as the travel time and includes all call types – all fires, false alarms, road traffic collisions and special service calls such as flooding, animal rescue, lift rescues etc

This includes all fires (ie both inside and outside, dwellings, care homes, hospitals and commercial properties etc) and also includes incidents where the fire was out on arrival.

2015: 21 min 32 secs

2016: 22 Min 42 Secs

Number of active fire-officers in the region- broken down by year. Detailing how many full time/ how many part time/ how many reserve

As of 1.4.15: We had 1579 firefighters of whom two worked half time. We had no reserve firefighters.

As of 1.7.16: We have 1475 firefighters of whom three work half time and one works three-quarters time. We have no reserve firefighters.

At the end of 2015 there were 41 fire engines, 19 brigade response vehicles and 3 brigade support vehicles. These numbers have not changed in 2016

Total budget for the region’s fire service, each year

The net budget requirement is as follow:

2015/16 = £98.5m

2016/17 = £97.4m

Names of any fire stations closed in the area, each year- number of staff a. made redundant/ lost job, b. redeployed elsewhere.

West Midlands Fire Service has not closed any Fire Stations in this period.
