A request for information about vehicles caused by electrical faults – 18033
RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 REQUEST
I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested on 26th February 2018.
Please find below a summary of our findings.
I would like to request some data on the amount of fires in vehicles caused by electrical faults. It would also be great to know if you had any insight on why these fires start and if you’ve seen a particular increase in this causation of fire at all? If possible, it would be great to get some stats dating back at least to 2010.
The table below shows, by calendar year, the number of accidental vehicle fires where the source of ignition was recorded as “electrical fault”.
|Year||count of incidents|
The next table shows the breakdown of what was recorded as “Cause”:
|Accumulation of flammable material||2||1|
|Combustible articles too close to heat source (or fire)||2||3||1|
|Fault in equipment or appliance (incl. overheating)||69||58||49||51||62||60||66||72|
|Faulty fuel supplies – Electricity||2||5||2||4||4||7||5||4|
|Faulty fuel supplies – Petrol product||1||1||1||1||2||1|
|Faulty leads to equipment or appliance||49||32||38||43||36||35||31||26|
|Negligent use of equipment, appliance or heat source (not cooking)||1||3||1|
|Vehicle crash or collision||2||1||4||1||1||1||1|
