17096 – Fatalities

< Back

Ref: FOI/17096

I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested on 5th September 2017

Please find below a summary of our findings.

We are currently collating domestic homicides and ‘honour’ killings (murders motivated by family ‘honour’) in the UK. We therefore wondered whether you hold any statistics particularly reflective of minority communities including South Asian women? As we wish to clarify how many women have been deliberately murdered via arson or committed suicide by setting themselves on fire for the last 5 years

Between 01/04/2012 and 31/03/2017, there have been four incidents recorded as “Suicide/ attempted suicide” and one recorded as “Homicide / attempted homicide”. Homicide / attempted homicide was a female casualty whose ethnicity was recorded as Asian (this includes other Asian ethnicities such as Pakistani or Indian) If the officer in charge is unsure of the ethnicity they are record less specific.

According to our records, none of the 4 attempted suicides resulted in a fatality, but the homicide did.

We do not record whether these were linked to ‘honour’ killings or, in the case of the homicide, who the person committing the act was. Therefore this information is exempt under section 1 of the freedom of information act as we do hold this information.
