A request for information about firefighter fitness tests
RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 REQUEST
I am writing to confirm that the West Midlands Fire Service has now completed its search for the information you requested on 17th March 2016
Please find below a summary of our findings.
What fitness tests does your FRS use? ie bleep test, hose-running exercise etc.
All West Midlands Fire Service operational personnel take a health related fitness test usually using the Covox Analysis Fitness Test
What constitutes a pass or fail, and what sanctions are available for those who fail?
We regard the results as pass, pass review, review or if necessary take personnel off operational duties until they have achieved the required fitness level.
Continual support is provided including a work up programme and reassessment every 2-3 months until the subject attains the required fitness level. We have had 100% success rate with post programme reviews.
What were the results of the most recent fitness tests carried out for wholetime firefighters? Ie 100 people assessed, 94 passed, 6 failed.
What were the pass rates for male and female wholetime firefighters? Ie 94% for men, 93% for women.
Over a year period we carried out 634 tests. 14% of the total were reviewed and most were male apart from 1 female who was returning from maternity leave.
In the past two years, has any action been taken against firefighters who have repeatedly failed fitness tests? Ie docked pay, dismissed.
No firefighter has been disciplined to date for not attaining the required fitness level specifically.
