Power BI Developer – ICT

West Midlands Fire Service are embarking on the roll-out of Power BI (Premium) as its enterprise reporting solution. The Power BI Developer role is responsible for the design and delivery of effective Power BI reporting, dashboards, and data visualisation solutions to the organisation.

This role will also be training and developing a network of local Power BI super-users who can act as the local first line support. To be successful in this role, one will need excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, as well as a fast learner.

Employment Type: Full time – Temporary

Duration of employment: 18 Months Fixed Term Contract

Job location: West Midlands Fire Service HQ, 99 Vauxhall Road, Nechells, BirminghaM, b7 4hw

Working hours: Working full time 37 hours per week Monday to Friday with very occasional work outside of normal hours.

Salary: £41,675 – £43,662

• Gathering and documenting requirements from RPS internal staff as well as external clients
• Ingesting data from a variety of corporate data sources and performing required transformations in the Power BI query editor using a mixture of utilizing the UI and writing M code.
• Undertaking basic data modelling
• Developing calculations in DAX which are accurate and performant on large datasets.
• Designing effective layouts using themes and report grids, working closely with our Marketing team to remain on brand.
• Utilizing effectively the navigation features in Power BI (e.g. bookmarks, drill-throughs) to guide readers through a compelling data-driven story.
• Shaping our approach for governance and deployment of Power BI across WMFS, including advising on licensing and distribution/sharing models.
• Developing and delivering Power BI user training. Developing and supporting a network of more advanced super users.
• Undertaking data analyses to support decision making
• Ensure work is fully documented and referenced in line with agreed processes and formats

Education and experience
• Managing and optimising Power BI solutions in an enterprise context.
• Developing Reporting & Dashboards with other Microsoft solutions (SSAS, SSRS & Power Pivot)
• SQL Server DAX calculations in an analytical capacity and using MDX to query multidimensional data
• Designing conceptual and logical data models.

Knowledge/Skills
• Strong experience in PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server.
• Competent in developing engaging and effective data visualisations.
• Up to date knowledge of latest Power BI features and functionality
• Strong data analysis skills
• Proficient in writing SQL, DAX, and M
• Knowledge of SSAS (Tabular and Multi-dimensional) and Power Apps
• Ability to take client requirements, understand them and turn them into a powerful story told through engaging visuals in Power BI.
• Confident communicating with stakeholders of all levels including the ability to advise, train and support staff and clients where necessary.
