We have an exciting opportunity for a talented, experienced, dynamic and ambitious Political and Policy Advisor.

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the largest Metropolitan Fire and Rescue Service in England outside of London, serving seven local authority areas (Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton councils). The post holder will have an opportunity to play an active role within the Portfolio Team which has a direct link into our Chief Fire Officer and the Strategic Enabling Team.

This role is to provide high-level professional support through specialist research, progressively developed analysis and well considered professional advice to the Portfolio, including the Chief Fire Officer and Strategic Enabling Team. The core functions include, specifically assisting with policy formation, local/regional/national political engagement and strategic communications.

You will possess extensive policy, political and strategic experience with a proven track record developing and implementing innovative approaches that deliver exceptional results. You will revel in cutting the policy cloth and operating in a challenging public-sector landscape.

You will provide business critical strategic advice to the Chief Fire Officer, the Strategic Enabling Team, the Portfolio Team and key stakeholders on policy and political formation, which informs and shapes the corporate strategy based on a rich understanding and interpretation of local, regional and national social, technological, economic, environmental, political, legal and ethical agendas.

You will influence the development and implementation of organisational policies and working practices which take into consideration our corporate priorities and objectives.

You will lead on the strategic stakeholder co-ordination and engagement through establishing, maintaining and developing relationships, representing the organisation with local, regional and national partners and stakeholders both within and outside of the Fire sector.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to articulate effectively and confidently. You will enjoy line management and leading beyond authority in a matrix management structure.

• Relevant degree or equivalent qualification.
• Extensive, relevant experience in policy, politics/public affairs or similar field
• Able to convey complex information at all levels in the form of formal and informal written communications
• Able to provide effective scrutiny and challenge
• Able to prioritise competing pressures to meet tight deadlines
• Able to plan and execute project work effectively
• Able to interpret legislation, regulations, complex written information and political issues
• Able to identify new ideas and methods that deliver improvement and efficiencies
