Principal Infrastructure Support Engineer
Description

The Principal Infrastructure Support Engineer will define the standard operating systems configurations (including versions, packages and patch levels), management tools, scripts, and operating processes.

They will also participate in the hands on management of the production systems, fault resolution, capacity planning and root cause analysis. They will be instrumental in building a world-class systems infrastructure that is constantly evolving and expanding.

This position will require a responsible, team oriented, well organized individual with strong technical and communications skills. Candidate must have the ability to handle concurrent issues while adapting quickly to rapidly changing priorities.

Key Areas:

  • Playing an active role in the supervision and mentoring of engineers of the Infrastructure Team
  • to assist with physical infrastructure of the Brigade ensuring that it is correctly installed and maintained
  • working with the large number of suppliers and support companies required to maintain the organisations systems
  • a pragmatic and flexible approach to the role accepting that no job description can ever be completely definitive
  • ability to own and manage projects, ensuring delivery are within budget and timescales.

Responsibilities

Information Security
Maintains the security, confidentiality and integrity of information systems through compliance with relevant legislation and regulations. Designs, implements and operates controls and management strategies to allow this.

Ownership and initiative
Takes ownership of problems and proactively resolves technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements. Takes full accountability for actions taken and decisions made.

Problem solving
Understands and identifies problems, analysing and helping to identify the appropriate solution. Is able to classify and prioritise problems, document their causes and implement remedies.

Maintains focus on the whole life of service delivery - designs, develops, delivers and operates. Ensures that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service

Systems design
Creates the specification and design of systems to meet defined business needs. Has the ability to work with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into technical designs.  Able to visualise the ideal user service, come up with design ideas and possible design approaches. Explores different approaches to solving problems.

Integrates and tests components, systems and their interfaces to create operational services.

Technical understanding
Has the specific knowledge which underpins an individual’s ability to deliver the responsibilities and tasks of their role.  This relates to the application of the required breadth and depth of technical knowledge.

Testing
Plans, designs, manages, executes and reports tests, using appropriate tools and techniques, and works within regulations. Ensures risks associated with deployment are adequately understood and documented.

Troubleshooting and problem resolution
Has lateral thinking capability to dissect a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution.

You'll also be able to:

  • Able to troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities
  • work with the Infrastructure Manager to develop and implement an annual work plan for the infrastructure team
  • help to drive innovation by suggesting new methods of working and operating to improve the effectiveness of the infrastructure team and the infrastructure they support
  • ensure good communications and inter-working between the team and the business
  • assist the team to perform its support duties and within Service Level Agreement’s
  • act as an escalation point for faults or complaints without circumventing or undermining team members
  • identify any issues that are known in advance that could affect the service delivery to the business and identify steps that could be taken to resolve them or minimise the impact
  • ensure the change control process is followed for all installations, un-installations, updates and changes. Accessing and documenting any risks and impacts to the business
  • respond to any emergency situations that arise to ensure the service is restored as quickly as possible
  • ensure upgrades and enhancements are properly planned and implemented to agreed quality standards
  • ensure compliance with the organisation’s Equality and Diversity policy and relevant legislation
  • ensure compliance with and promotion of the organisation’s Health & Safety policy and legislation
  • demonstrate a commitment to environmentally friendly practices in line with the organisation’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and relevant legislation

Technical

Assist with the management of software requirements for recurring desktop and mobile patching for customer environments.

Support Microsoft System Centre Configuration Manager

Support Microsoft Intune

Assist with creating, deploying, and maintaining Task Sequences

Assist with creating packages for Operating System Deployments (OSD)

Assist with deployment, configuration, and monitoring of monthly Software Updates, patch compliance, and remediation.

Assist in developing and maintaining PowerShell scripts for automation tasks

Perform routine system maintenance on servers and applications as needed

Support implementation of Role Based Access Control (RBAC)

Assist with providing oversight for automation of system management using SCCM / Intune

Troubleshoot of operational issues inside the SCCM area

Work with the Infrastructure Manager in establishing standard operations and maintenance activities and procedures

Monitor and provide status updates for day to day operational concerns to customers and program stakeholders

Participate in the development and maintenance of appropriate project technical documentation including design, configuration, installation

Troubleshoot system related problems and perform break/fix actions to restore service outage

Knowledge of DEP/Android Enterprise

Administration of MS Active Directory / Group Policy

Knowledge of Azure Active Directory

Knowledge of Office 365

Knowledge of VDI environment based on Citrix
