The Young Firefighters Association

The Young Firefighters’ Association (YFA) in the West Midlands Fire Service has been operating for over twenty years and gives young people aged between 11 and 17 the opportunity to get involved in activities and projects in a fire service setting

There are 11 branches throughout the West Midlands, 3 of which are located within Sandwell. Fire and Rescue Service Youth Training drills using hoses, ladders and search and rescue facilities are undertaken by the young people and through this, they learn about team work and communication skills and the physical activity increases health and fitness.

We also give the YFA members the opportunity to experience adventure activities such as canoeing, climbing, walking and camping. West Bromwich YFA recently spent 8 days in the South of France enjoying water based activities.

Most branches participate in fund raising events to boost funds for both the individual branch as well as for nominated charities. The YFA will also represent the brigade at public events such as Remembrance Day parades.

Wednesbury and Oldbury YFA’s (the latter being the first special needs branch in the country) meet on Wednesday evenings at 7pm, whilst the West Bromwich YFA meets on Fridays at 7pm.

If you are interested in joining the YFA, please write to the officer in charge of the appropriate branch (detailed below), detailing your name, address and date of birth. You will then be contacted with further information.
