What Do North Birmingham Fire Stations Do In The Community

North Birmingham Fire Stations are committed to providing prevention based activity to the community in many ways. 

All 7 stations provide the following services in our community:

  • Partners within the Community: In North Birmingham the fire service have close ties with a lot of other agencies which enable us all to deliver our services and strive towards making our communities a safer, cleaner and greener place to live. Partnerships with the police, primary care trust, Age Concern as well as local neighbourhood groups and Local Delivery Groups all provide our communities with an efficient and quality service.
  • Young People and the Fire Service: West Midlands Fire Service is involved in a number of initiatives involving young people from the local community including the Young Fire-fighters’ Association, ‘Your Choice on the Road’, “RESPECT” and “FIRE” projects. For more information please click here
  • Home Safety Checks (HSC’s): During the period April 2009 - March 2010 the 7 Fire Stations across North Birmingham are committed to the completion of 4,000 HSC’S, 70% of which will be in our most at risk areas.
  • Faith Education officer: To enable the Fire Service to direct work into our most at risk groups, a Faith education officer will be working with the Asian community towards educating and promoting fire and road safety.
  • School Visits: All Key Stage 2, Year 5 primary schools pupils have a visit from the local fire-fighters. They deliver the SPARX fire safety education program. A large number of pupils were lucky enough to go to the Red Hot Education Centre at Handsworth where they can experience what happens when a room catches fire. For more information please click here
  • Schools Quiz: The West Midlands Fire Service schools quiz is supported in North Birmingham. Fire Stations hold local heats with the winners representing the area at the regional final. The interest grows from year to year and it is hoped that 20 schools will be taking part in North Birmingham this year.
  • Site Risk Surveys: Fire-fighters are frequently inspecting local businesses to educate themselves on the risks within North Birmingham. This risk information is shared with fire-fighters across the West Midlands metropolitan district.
  • Training: Fire-fighters are regularly involved in training to ensure relevant skills in dealing with emergency situations are constantly maintained to a high standard, this ranges from technical training and small practical sessions to large scale training operations involving up to 20 Fire appliances
  • Community Fire Safety Campaigns: Fire-fighters support fire safety campaigns. Campaigns can be created and marketed by the government such as ‘Pull your finger out” or locally such as High Rise Safety Advice’
  • Community Open Days: Every Year our fire stations open their doors and invite the local community to see what we do, spread the Fire Safety message, interact with our fire-fighters and have fun at the same time.
